Race(s) Recap: June 21st-23rd

Another busy week for the NACHOs all over the USA!

Friday June 21st: Summer Solstice 5M, Newton NJ

Tom's rundown of the event, which he completed in 46 minutes!

"well, this course kicked my ass something fierce! lots of climbing up and down intense rocky hills. i started out reasonably fresh, and felt totally spent by the first mile. i'd run the course three years ago, in 42ish, so i knew what i was in for. and so i was pretty much holding myself back through out the race. i didn't want to end up halfway up the big hill, with nothing in my tank. the downside is, i never was able to get my mind into race mode - only survival mode. not that i think a more keen mental approach would have helped - indeed, had i pushed any harder earlier in the race, i surely would have been done for in the 4th mile. it didn't help that the promised water stop at 2-miles in never materialized. so cruel!
i'll be back here in november, for a trail half marathon, and this course will be the final five miles of that race. hoo boy.
i've got some work to do."

Tom looking psyched before the race!

Saturday June 22nd: Narrow River Turnaround 1M Swim, North Kingstown RI

Brian, Joe and Casey took to the water for the first open swim race of the NACHO season!  Casey was brave enough to tackle the course without a wetsuit, and finished first in an impressive time of 28:57.  Not bad for zero training!  Brian and Joe battled it out for 2nd place NACHO, with Joe lunging for the Popsicle stick a little faster than Brian, with their times 33:23 and 33:24.  Joe's analytical analysis of his and Brian's swim, looking back at last year's results;

"You got 5% faster and I got 1% slower than last year.  If we both stay healthy and in shape, I do not expect to cross the finish line ahead of you in the future. Looking at the middle 80% of the field, the average time in 2012 was 30:30 and in 2013 was 30:35 (0.3% slower). Of the 123 swimmers, I could match 37 names for both years. They were 0.6% slower in 2013 than 2012.

You are getting better, I am getting older."

Well done gentlemen!

Casey, Brian and Joe ready to hit the water!

Sunday June 23rd: NY Giants Run for Champions 5K, East Rutherford NJ

Tom was at it again, crushing his second race of the weekend in 24 minutes!

"it was a hot morning for a parking lot 5k. and my quads were still very very sore from friday's 5-mile trail race. but somehow i managed a fairly respectable 5k today. managed to do a few gear-changes and passing maneuvers, but wasn't quite into race-mode. it'll come back, i'm certain. 51/299 M35-39, 320/2993 overall
after the race, tommy ran a 60-yd kids race, and had a lot of fun."

Very determined to run!
